Masoor Dhal Recipes

Ingredients :

4 tbsp oil

3 cloves

2 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp turmeric

6 cardamom pods

1 inch cinnamon stick

1 onion, chopped

1 inch piece of fresh root ginger, chopped

1 green chili, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, chopped

1/2 tsp garam masala

8 oz masoor dhal (red split lentils)

4 tbsp lemon juice

salt

marjoram, to garnish

Method :
  1. Heat the oil, add cloves, ground coriander, turmeric, cardamom pods and cinnamon, fry until they start to swell.
  2. Add onion, fry 5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Add ginger, chili, garlic, garam masala, cook 5 minutes.
  4. Add lentils, stir and fry for 1 minute.
  5. Season to taste with salt and add enough water to come about 1.25 inches above the level of the lentils.
  6. Bring to the boil, cover, simmer for 20 minutes, until the dhal is really thick and the lentils are tender.
  7. Sprinkle with lemon juice and stir to mix.
  8. Garnish with marjoram.
  9. Ready to serve.
